Macedonia - (BORKA)
"BORKA" was established due to a result of the current situation in the health sector in the Republic of Macedonia.
It was concluded that in Macedonia there was a need for an association that will generally treat all types of cancer and which will fight against cancer in general, but also individually against various types of cancer. "BORKA" was formed to help fill this gap in the civic health sector and to cooperate with all involved stakeholders.
Association in its work focuses on supporting cancer patients, the general public, public health institutions, NGOs, in their efforts to implement activities that will oppose all kinds of cancer. The helpline service in Macedonia is + 389 (0) 800 55 777.
Borka focuses on all types of cancer and aim to fight against cancer in general, but individually against various types of cancer. Borka provides psychosocial support groups for patients of any type of cancer.
The organisation facilitated a screening steering committee made up of clinical doctors from the clinic for gastroenterohepatogy, clinic for oncology and the clinic for abdomen surgery, medical professors and most importantly patients.
Every day useful information relative to the presention of colorectal cancer is posted on the website and Facebook page. BORKA have big support from media who add the campaign teasers, banners and leaflets to their web pages. Because of this contact, BORKA have made several interviews and TV guests for the local and national TV stations.
Twice a week, throughout the whole year BORKA visit the colorectal cancer patients at the PHI University of Radiotherapy and Oncology. The purpose of the visit is psychosocial support and to give educational brochures with useful information about the advanced treatment of the colorectal cancer.

2014
In March and April 2014 Borka organised Don’t Make Excuses campaign for raising the awareness of colorectal cancer inMacedonia.
- On the 14th of March, Borka held a press conference to announce the beginning of the Don’t Make Excuses campaign. The campaign was supported by The Ministry of Health, The Institute for Public Health of Macedonia and The Clinical Hospital Acibadem-Sistina.
- Leaflets with basic information for colorectal cancer prevention were printed and distributed.
- Living with Metastatic Colorectal Cancer brochure (Да се живее со метастатски колоректален карцином) was reprinted.
- Borka visited patients at The PHI University of Radiotherapy and Oncology twice a week to give support and to give useful information about advanced treatment of colorectal cancer.
- Don’t Make Excuses campaign was supported by Macedonian media - all information regarding the campaign was published.
- On the 4th of April Borka held the second press conference to share the information regarding the campaign, set the Inflatable Colon at Skopje City Mall (the biggest shopping mall in Macedonia). The Inflatable Colon allowed the visitors to learn about the different stages of the colorectal cancer and other diseases of the large intestine.

2013
March 2013 “Don’t make excuses” campaign for raising awareness of colorectal cancer in Macedonia
- 04.03.2013 Borka held press conference to announced the beginning of the campaign Don’t make excuses. The campaign was supported by Ministry of health and The Institute for public health of Macedonia.
- The ministry of health has provided free FOBT test for every risk patient.
- Printed informative leaflets with basic information for prevention of colorectal cancer.
- Printed the patient’s brochure “Living with metastatic colorectal cancer”
- “Да се живее со метастатски колоректален карцином”.
- Borka is visiting the patients at PHI University of radiotherapy and oncology, twice a week to give support and to give useful information about advanced treatment of the colorectal cancer.
- The “Don’t make excuses” campaign was supported by Macedonian electronic media, who have set the campaign teasers, and published all our information regarding “Don’t make excuses” campaign.

2009
- A press conference to raise awareness was held in March 2009 and 200 t-shirts, 10,000 badges, 15,000 brochures and banners were printed to promote awareness.
- In March 2009 BORKA was interviewed on many television shows where discussions on colorectal cancer and prevention took place
- The most important achievement for 2009 was the effective lobbying of the Ministry of Health - which included the Government and Parliament
The final result was acceptance for a screening program
2007
- The group was set-up in 2007 to provide support for those living with cancer and encourage reforms in the current healthcare system in Macedonia
- The website www.borka.org.mk was set up for the association
